Why did you choose to participate in Performing Ourselves?

I did it last year with my 1st grade class and I loved the experience. My class is bilingual and it is a great way for us to grow as a community through movement because everyone can participate.

What did you like most about your class participating in performing ourselves?

I saw my kids gain more confidence and  become more comfortable and outgoing.

Do you have a moment or story you would like to share about your class or students(s)?

All of my students wanted to dance more during choice when the Performing Ourselves residency was over. They wanted to continue moving!

What are some skills that were addressed through performing ourselves?

Body control, bubble space, moving through small / medium /  large kinesphere space as well as moving quickly and slowly. They have much more control over their bodies and a greater understanding of their movement.

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Janessa Garcia. I am 10 years old and in 5th grade. My favorite subject in school is math because I love to be challenged and art because I love to be creative. When I grow up I want to be a singer or a dancer because dancing helps to represent the song and what it means to each person.

 What's your favorite hobby?

I like to play with my dogs, watch TV, and play computer games.

What's your favorite thing about dance?

I like that there's a big group of us and no one judges each other. It feels very opening. Normally, I don't like dancing in front of people because I feel like I'm going to be judged but at dance group I feel like it's a safe space and there's no judging.

What have you learned by being a dancer?

I've learned cool tricks and styles of dance and I've learned to have less stage fright.

what is some advice you'd give to someone to live their best life?

Express yourself and don't care what other people think. People expect you to be or act a certain way but it's really nice to be unique and be your own self. When people judge you, sometimes it's because they are really sad inside and not because they don't like you, so just keep being you and it will all be okay.
